"Music is an agreeable harmony for the honor of God and the permissible delights of the soul."

Johann Sebastian Bach

About First Church of Kennebunkport

History of our Hook Organ

When music is integral to worship, our organ plays center stage. Our Hook Organ was built in 1854 and installed in First Church in 1916 as a gift from our friends at South Church in Kennebunkport. In 2016, under the guidance of then Music Director Joyce Painter Rice, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of this gift and launched a campaign for its full restoration.

Attention to Detail

The Hook Organ, also known as the E. & G.G. Hook Organ, refers to a type of pipe organ built by the Hook family of organ builders in the United States during the 19th century. The Hook family, particularly brothers Elias and George Greenleaf Hook, were prominent organ builders known for their craftsmanship and innovation in the field of organ construction.

Restoration required Faith

Restoration proved expensive and expansive. Our goal for full restoration was ambitious and to reach it, we had to engage the entire First Church family, Kennebunkport and beyond.  The expanse of our efforts needed to celebrate music, faith, and so much more. Acclaimed musicians from around New England joined our efforts by performing celebratory concerts. The town was treated and transformed by talents and gifts, Opera productions , hymn recitals and more.

Now unto Him, who is able to keep, able to keep you from falling and present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy. to the only wise god our savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. amen.
